May 28th Celebrations

A weeks worth of May 28th, Armenian Independence Day celebrations ended on Sunday June 1st with a parade that included participants from all the organizations and groups that operate out of the Armenian Community Centre as well as the community at large.

The day started with the Scouts taking in the tricolour Armenian flag into the church to be blessed and then with the lead of the flag bearers and the Homenetmen Scout Fanfare Band, the 3km route started. The route along Consumers Ave, Sheppard Ave and Victoria Park Ave had cars and people stopping to see what was going on.  Over a thousand walked in the parade which featured banners in front of each organization and a float truck carrying Armenian symbols, a church and Mount Ararat. Committee members handed out May 28 flyers to bystanders.

The Parade ended at the Armenian Youth Centre with the raising of the blessed flag. Everyone then entered the AYC for the official commemoration. Speaches were given by Mary Rose Abousefian and ACC President Jack Janbazian.

The week long activities included evenings with popular local and invited singers, a scout campfire show, art show, students evening of patriotic songs and art display, and a one women show about the 40 days of Musa Dagh.
